Local congregation's building designated National Historic LandmarkFrank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, Beth Sholom in Elkins Park, PA

Beth Sholom Synagogue is celebrating their newfound National Historic Landmark status.  The National Park Service bestowed this honor upon the Elkins Park, Penn. congregation during a May 6 ceremony.

Beth Sholom is Frank Lloyd Wright's only synagogue, a glazed glass pyramidal tower on a base of reinforced concrete and steel.  This synagogue is the only building for which the famed architect shared credit; Rabbi Mortimer J. Cohen discussed his wishes to manifest the metaphors of the tent and the mountain when collaborating with Wright.

This status is the highest recognition the United States can give to a historic property, for properties must possess exceptional value or quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the nation.  Built between 1954 and 1959, this ode to Mt. Sinai is considered one of Wright's most important commissions of his career, nestled in a Philadelphia-area suburb.  According to the National Park Service, Beth Sholom provides an unparalleled architectural experience as it melds modernity and novelty with traditional meaning and iconography.

Beth Sholom is an active partner with Partners for Sacred Places.  The congregation has attended orientations, contributed to peer leadership workshops, and currently serves on the Philadelphia Regional Fund for Sacred Places advisory committee.
