Do not store flammable liquid containers in the basement where they can be ignited by open flames from hot water heaters or furnaces.

Store paint and other combustible solvents in approved flammable liquid cabinets. If possible, keep these flammables out of the key buildings and store in alternative structures.

Upgrade fuse boxes and any electrical wiring that shows signs of deterioration.

This "temporary" repair of deteriorated wiring became permanent. A more appropriate solution is removal and replacement with new wiring.

Fire doors are designed to stop the internal spread of fire. If left open, they are ineffective.

An overloaded electrical condition can lead to an over-heated breakdown of wiring insulation. In this particular instance the cords are sitting on a readily ignitable piece of paper.

Unsupervised use of candles should not be permitted. Maintain a minimum of 4 feet between lit candles and draperies and hangings. Candles should be properly supported to prevent them from tipping over. Photo by Christine M. Ferinde Notice the burn marks on the wall behind the toaster oven. Throw it away.
