The Historiographer of the Church
The Historiographers of the African Methodist Episcopal Church

There shall be a historiographer of the a.m.e. Church, who shall hold the rank of general officer. The historiographer shall be elected at the General Conference, shall report to that body, and shall be subject to the authority and control of the General Board through the Commission on Publications. The historiographer shall report annually to the General Board and to the Commission on Publications.

Duties

A. The historiographer shall write an updated history of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. This work shall rest upon exhaustive research in primary sources in relevant archives and libraries, and discuss the denomination's development according to accepted scholarly standards. Additionally, the historiographer shall write scholarly articles for a.m.e. publications and other journals, and anthologies about various aspects of African Methodism. Moreover, the historiographer shall publish, edit, and reprint important works by a.m.e. bishops, ministers, and laypersons. The historiographer also shall provide technical assistance to clergy and laypersons within congregations, annual conferences, episcopal districts, and other entities within the denomination engaged in writing histories of these organizations. The historiographer shall write handbooks and other materials to help in such projects.

B. The historiographer shall represent the a.m.e. Church and participate in the Wesley Historical Society, the American Society of Church History, the Charles Wesley Society, the World Methodist Historical Society, the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, Inc., the African Studies Association, and such other scholarly groups that the historiographer shall deem relevant to the global development of the a.m.e. Church.

C. The historiographer shall be the archivist of the a.m.e. Church. This general officer shall be responsible for finding denominational records and placing them in safe and accessible locations. The historiographer shall identify non-a.m.e. archives and libraries which have possession of a.m.e. Church materials, and secure copies of such documents. The historiographer shall make recommendations to the General Conference concerning the location of a connectional archives for the a.m.e. Church.

D. The historiographer shall travel to episcopal districts outside the United States to conduct research, collect historical materials, give presentations about a.m.e. Church development in overseas areas, and prepare publications about the a.m.e. Church in Africa, the Americas, and Europe.

E. The historiographer, when necessary, shall recommend to presiding bishops the appointment of persons within episcopal districts to assist the historiographer in the location and collection of denominational records.

F. The historiographer shall serve as a consultant and resource person for clergy and lay, scholars and students, foundations and educational institutions, and agencies which require information about a.m.e. history and traditions. This general officer shall respond to these queries and provide materials for their projects or requests.

G. The historiographer shall function as a lecturer, seminar instructor, and workshop leader. This general officer shall respond to congregations, annual conferences, episcopal districts, and other organizations within the denomination which request presentations on a.m.e. history and traditions. Similarly, the historiographer shall respond to educational institutions which request lectures and presentations about the a.m.e. past.
